Cultivated lab diamonds vs. mined diamonds

A Guide to diamonds

One is grown in a lab, the other is mined from the Earth. Both are chemically, optically and physically the same.

The word ‘diamond’ comes from the Greeks, who named the stone ‘adamas,’ meaning unbreakable or unalterable—just like love.

Diamonds have fascinated humans with their unique properties and beauty for many years. They’ve come to symbolize strength, resilience, and power.

The first known diamond engagement ring was given in 1477, sparking the tradition and cementing their status as the ultimate symbol of love and heirloom—a sentiment that has spread across cultures and through time.

All of the diamond choices made for our LDG clients are rooted in sourcing and curating something specific to you, the client, and your love story. Each stone chosen encapsulates our unwavering commitment to precision, elegance and ethical principles.

Our diamonds are all graded by top gemological institutes.

The 4 C’s

Diamonds aren’t judged by looks and sparkle alone. Each stone is carefully evaluated using a universal grading system known as the “Four Cs”—cut, clarity, color, and carat weight. These standards, established by leading institutes like GIA, ensure that every diamond’s quality and value can be measured, compared, and trusted.

Cut

The shape and proportions of a diamond are determined by its cut. The most recognized are the round brilliant, oval, marquise, pear shape, heart shape, emerald and princess cuts.

Carat

A carat is a standard unit to measure the weight of a diamond. A diamond’s value varies according to its number of carats and its rarity.

Color

Diamonds are graded from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow) The closer a diamond is to colorless, the more extraordinary and rarer it is considered to be.

Clarity

All diamonds, cultivated lab grown and mined have inclusions. Clarity refers to the presence, visibility, number and size. The diamond is graded from Flawless to Included.
